Village Education Resource Center (VERC)
VERC is a non-government, non-political and non-profit voluntary organization. It is registered with the Department of Social Services under the Voluntary Agencies Ordinance of 1961 and under the Foreign Donations Regulations of 1978 and 1982 of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. It enjoys sectoral approval of operation from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. VERC is registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau. VERC operates out of its head office in Savar and its 24 field offices.

VERC with the distressed people: Flood 2007
By early August 2007 flood hit Bangladesh with multiple affect on life and livelihood. Out of 64 Districts 16 were mostly affected and other 4 Districts were partially affected. Floods that swept more than half of Bangladesh killed over 750 people in July and August, left some six million homeless and damaged crops on 700,000 hectares (1.75 million acres). This flooding has left millions of people unable to cope with livelihood.more

          

In the working area of Village Education Resource Center (VERC) mainly two Districts and one Upazila were mostly affected by this year flood i.e. ManikGonj District and Narayangonj District and Savar Upazila under Dhaka District.

VERC received donation from four different INGOs ( DFID, UNDP, TDS-Nederland and IDRF-Canada) for distributing relief goods among the flood affected people of the above mentioned three areas.

VERC formed different committees to operate the relief activities smoothly. The committees are (i) Purchase committee, (ii) Monitoring and quality assurance team with staff members and (iii) Distribution committee.

Distribution Procedures:
* Collect flood affected house holds’ list from Local Governments office (Union Parishad)
* Identify the mostly affected and households yet non relief received from the collected list with the help of local UP members
* Move to door to door of the selected households for distribution of coupon for receiving relief
* Distribution of relief with the help of Local Government’s members

Items of the relief packet were:

* Oral Saline
* Water Purifying Tablets
* Mosquito Net (double)
* Carbolic Soap
* Laundry Soap
* Sharee (Long Cloth womens’ ware)
* Lungee (Long Cloth mens’ ware)
* Towel (Gamcha)
* Candle
* Matches
* Flattened Rice (Chira)
* Molasses (Gur)
* Plastic Sheet
* Parboiled Rice (Chal)
* Lentil (Musur Dal)
* Potato

By the first week of September 2007 VERC has distributed relief among 3000 mostly affected flood hit house holds. Now VERC is undertaking some post flood rehabilitation activities in those areas.
