Toilet brings fortune to Aklima (WatSan) |
Aklima Begum lives at Mollikpur village. Mollikpur
is under Fatapur union under upazila Nachol in Chapainowabgonj district.
Her father died years before. She has mother but she lives separately.
They are three sisters. Eldest sister is married and she has two
kids. But her sister
was divorced due to inability to meet the dowry
claimed by her husband and since then she has been living with Aklima
begum as a dependent. Aklima’s sister is now making a small
income as a domestic worker. Basically Aklima is only the earning
member of the family. They have only homestead but no cultivable
land. They are struggling hard for survival. Initially they were
supported by the villagers. In this perspective about 4/5 years
ago, Aklima borrowed 2000 taka without from the neighbour Mrinal
Kanti with no security against the amount. They agreed that Aklima
will pay the interest free loan amount in monthly instalments. She
started selling clay made toys, dolls in the local market. By selling
these, Aklima maintains her family and pays installment of the loan.
At that time, she was allotted a space jointly by the Union Parishad
Chairman and Mollikpur Bazar Committee for selling betel leaf and
cigarette. Day by day she started earning more money, her income
becomes 70/80 taka per day. Immediate after that VERC Nachol office
established a public toilet as project plan in
Mollikpur bus stand with the participation of Bazar Committee of
Mollikpur. Union Parished and Bazar Committee took a decision to
give this public toilet to Aklima. As a result, on 31 May, 2007,
this public toilet was leased out to Aklima for one year. As per
agreement she is supposed to pay 1000 taka per month. Aklima looks
after the toilet, her niece cooperates her in this work. Moreover,
she arranged a petty shop of betel leaf in the same market. Thus
she oversees two types of work at the same time. At present she
earns in average 60/70 taka in a day. Especially she earns more
money in a market day. Now she is totally self solvent, she leads
her family from the income of public toilet and betel leaf shop.
She does not feel any problem due to local people’s cooperation.
Aklima is very grateful to VERC, Mollikpur Bazar committee and union
parished for giving the opportunity to engage with public toilet.
This public toilet brings a good fortune for her. She dreams an
economic solvency with her family members.
